How fast should I be in that particular situation? How far is the line and the lay line? Which sail do I choose with TWS 16 knts and AWA 60 degrees? How much have I improved in the last racing season? What mistakes did I make?
If “doing everything by nose” is no longer enough, it is time to request the clinic or register in Phi!Navig workshop to acquire the necessary tools to produce precise polar, target data or cross over sails, leaving as little space as possible to mistakes. Furthermore to keep track of the assimilated know-how, the achieved results and areas for improvement in terms of performance.
70% of the boats that race are equipped with instrumentation paid top dollar, of which only 5% of the potential is used. So? Why not train a crew member who can provide us with all these benefits?
Description
Phi!Navig explores issues related to the choice and use of electronic instrumentation on sailing boats for regatta and/or yachting as well as the role and skills of the navigator during navigation.
Organization
The seminar will take place in a classroom with support and PC. During the course, the necessary in-depth materials will be handed to the participants. Personal laptops are not required unless they have navigation software installed. It is however possible, even if not necessary, to bring own specific software which are already in use.
Who is it for?
The concepts of Phi!Navig are particularly direct and useful to sailors who race, but also suitable for those who use “standard” instruments normally installed on board or portable instruments.
To participate in the seminar, knowledge or use of a particular navigation software system is not necessary, but we’ll analyse the use of instrumentation in general. Furthermore, sophisticated on-board instrumentation is not required.
Seminar’s objectives
> Acquisition of the fundamental elements for the choice and purchase of instrumentation;
> Acquisition of the fundamental elements for the development and calibration of the instrumentation;
> Knowledge and use of navigation tools and systems during regatta (or cruise);
> Ability to analyse the collected data to improve performance;
> Development and use of the exercises necessary for the management of on-board systems.
Topics developed during the seminar
1. Framework of the seminar
– Aims of the workshop and program;
– Role of the navigator and navigation tools;
– Composition of a racing team and role of the navigator;
– Activities of the navigator and data analysis experts in a top team and in an amateur team;
2. Choice and development of the navigation system
– Choice of instrumentation, navigation system and data analysis systems;
– Instrumentation calibration and tuning;
3. Use of the navigation system during regattas
– Analysis of typical situations: departure, approach to buoys, upwind and stern sides, arrival, coastal navigation;
4. Use of the navigation system during cruise
– Typical situations analysis: coastal navigation, long course, weather;
5. Use of navigation systems after the race
– Data analysis to verify performance, results and possibilities for improvement
Tutors
Bruno Zirilli, Gilberto Pastorella and Maurizio Loberto, who have worked with us for many years now, have developed a precise and structured educational method dedicated to teaching this important role in regatta.
